Beyond Duty tells how the duty-driven Nicholas (Nick) Samuel Richardson, the grandson and son of decorated war heroes, discovers the transcendence of love.  He first learns about duty from his paternal grandparents who raise him.  Nick's strong sense of duty develops and becomes manifest on the athletic field, in stopping a vicious assault on a family member, through battles in Vietnam for which he earns the Congressional Medal of Honor, in the achievements and conflicts of his professional life as a scientist and physician, and, most importantly, through relationships with the women he loves and who love him.  Nick comes to understand that love lies beyond duty and that duty without love has little ultimate value.
